Bernini’s magnificent 17th century spiral staircase, the first of its kind to not use a supporting middle rail – the entire structure is supported by the finely carved travertine spirals and their weight against the wall. This triumph of architecture and engineering was used as the servants’ staircase in the residence of Pope Paul V attached to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
